Outside, the moon shines with a reddish haze, and howling winds knock out power lines. Trees scrape the side of your house; something’s scratching the closet door…a big something. Gather your flashlights and suit up for the unspeakable, for you will surely find it in the closets of Blood Moons and Nightscapes: —A little gray man who inspires fear, and with good reason. No one he approaches lives longer than a few days... —And the people living underneath the sewers with blood red eyes, who are seeking retribution and exact their revenge in human flesh... —And nurses whose flair for torturing the elderly make Colin Norris seem like Florence Nightingale. —And grim-faced enemy soldiers who kill by twilight, competing with poisonous snakes and other vermin... —And the computers at Memorial Hospital—impressive and reliable equipment until someone starts using them to delete people... You'll find it all in Blood Moons and Nightscapes.

Desree is the ultimate "Daughter of the Forest ." Although only in her teens, she knows and understands the jungle and all its subtle moods and nuances. Her superior strength and agility combined with this knowledge allows her to thrive in the fierce wilderness filled with savage beasts and creatures.

Zanthor Than and Dejah Manth, Desree's parents, were descendants of the ancient branch of First Ones who chose to live in the wild and commune with nature rather than stay with the main branch of First One scientists who eventually departed the planet. They passed along their love of nature and adventure to their daughter.

When two German scientists find a portal back to the prehistoric past, they cannot resist the temptation to go and explore. After meeting the keeper of the ancient one's treasure trove, they quickly learn his secrets and kill him. They flee the land only to return with a small group of soldiers in order to take the treasure. A battle ensues over the treasure involving the soldiers, Desree and her parents, and a vast array of brutal creatures and animals.

The characters in the story were well written and very vivid. You knew and understood the main characters' strengths and motivations, and even found yourself liking some of the supporting animalistic characters. The story contained a lot of violent action scenes with bloody to-the-death fights with prehistoric beasts. The presence of advanced technology wars with such a primitive setting. This book is a sequel to Pangaea: Eden 's Planet.

Tamara of Valdehala'viande is extremely happy to be rescued from the primitive men of her world that have kidnapped her. To her relief her savor is a strange man not of her word, but he seems to have some intellect.

The harder Lamont tries to reach the area where he thinks his co-pilots escape shuttled crashed the worse his adventures become. Stranded on a planet far from his own home, Lamont does his best to survive. His companion on this search Tamara also becomes his loving mate. With one misadventure after another it is going to take all the skill and intellect of Lamont and Tamara to locate the missing co-pilot, but will this inhospitable world be the end of them all or will they find a way to survive?

The world created in this book by Tom Johnson is almost like stepping into a time machine and visiting our own past. The world of Feldin'grout is an amazingly thought up planet. The story line is wonderful, and the characters are nicely written. Tunnel Through Space is a bit of a slow read, but worth it if you can stick with it.

DISCO EVIL: DEAD MAN’S STAND

Review by: Neil K. Henderson

Dear Rod,

Finally getting the chance to comment back on DISCO EVIL: DEADMAN'S STAND. Sorry for the delay, but I've been right up to my eyeballs - and to some extent still am - in finishing my Agamemnon McPhee project which as I said last time I hope to do for 09/09/09, since there are nine books, the last book has nine stories and the title of the last story ends with Nine. Well, here it is 06/09/09 and I've got two days to spare with only a few

loose ends to check. This is a good time to pause and write to you. I must say, DISCO EVIL...certainly kept me entertained and helped me unwind in among editing sessions for HALIBUT! SANDWICH!, the aforementioned final book. The very fact that you have found a publisher is an incentive to me, as I've written my entire series without seeing a word in print. I recently had a disappointing brush with a vanity press, but escaped with just the tip of my bat-wing nicked by a star knife (all healed now).

You have certainly taken an interesting angle on vampire culture, with not only the uncompromising contemporary setting, but the "moral code" adhered to by your anti-hero. Indeed, the entire novel has a "both-sides-to-the-story" aspect which leaves one finally unable to take sides. As in life, no one is either all good or all bad. You make this point repeatedly, and stress the need for mutual understanding and cooperation. This indeed comes to pass not only between the Secret Compass and Rising Sun Group, but with Muslim and non-Muslim Australians. Some things take longer - I don't think Miles Henry would ever have been able to sit down and chew the fat with Paul Priestly (deceased). This might even be an area you could explore in a future novel - some kind of attempt at reaching peaceful co-existence, via group discussion sessions and specially set-up blood banks (a bit like Methadone programmes for heroin addicts). Then again, it would need to be done in a way that protected the vamps from any kind of harmful religious overtones - while still making the living less appetising.

I must say I have thoroughly enjoyed being transported around the globe for bat's-eye view of human existence in recent and present times. I like the way you handled differing timescales, with life going on as normal in ŃSW, while Paul maintained eternal youth. The only fault I found with this was that it didn't leave enough scope for in-depth varnpire adventure on those travels. That's an unavoidable problem, I suppose, since too much time spent with Paul would imbalance the structure of the novei. He did at least have some exciting near misses with the forces of Life and Order. I have to say, I didn't fancy his chances with those MacLean fellas one bit. I haven't actually spotted them myself, here in Knightswood, but I stspect that skirmish took place up near Lincoln Avenue - you'd need to be a nutter to go up there at night.

The private clinic paralleled a big private hospital in Clydebank - a town just outside Glasgow and bordering directly onto the northwest side (i.e. close to Knightswood). I think it's actually funded by Middle Eastern interests. Your Knightswood version could be seen as a legally unobjectionable equivalent. Did you know the main library in Glasgow, and for the whole West of Scotland, is called the Mitchell Library? It's a huge building with classical columns outside. I bet the vaults are deep too. We also have a Central Station, though I don't think it's built on a graveyard site. Then there's Pitt Street, home of the Strathclyde Police headquarters. (Is your Pitt Street real, or did you name it after Ingrid?)

Anyway, I've had a ball reading your book. I found myself drawn into your fictional world and engaging with your characters in a way that says pienty for your descriptive skills. I hope you have great success with it, and that it leads the way for many more.

All the best,
Neil

He vowed this would be the last time he stepped into the disco club, The Blue, but Paul Priestly never guessed how right and wrong he was. So many rejections can make a man do some crazy things, but when that man becomes a vampire, the world better stop and take notice.

Never one to take the easy route, Miles Henry becomes one of the elite undercover operatives for the Secret Compass. Their mission is to eradicate the vampire vermin from the earth. However, his mission is much more personal, and he vows to take out the one vampire who murdered his niece.

Paul admits to making a multitude of mistakes after his turning, but he cannot understand the personal vendetta the Secret Compass seems to have against him. He moves constantly to avoid their attacks, and over the span of many years, he circles the globe. The close calls happen with frightening frequency and still Paul manages to escape, much to the frustration of Miles and the Secret Compass. Miles knows his age is catching up with him, and if he cannot fulfill his personal vow, he can only pray that his great nephew will continue the fight.

Understanding and enjoying the axe that Paul has to grind against the “jockettes” of the world is just not quite happening for me. He seems to go off half-cocked most of the time, and it is hard to either feel sorry for him or have a sense of justice when he rids the world of nasty people. As for the majority of content in this book, world history seems to be the reigning theme, the detail of which is well researched and delivered with a true sense of imagination and knowledge.

Review by Lyn McConchie:
This is a nice little horror tale set in the era of Disco. In a way it reminds me of the growing sub-genre of taking a famous old novel (Jane Austen seems to be current favorite) and adding horror. In this case the author (an Australian) has taken disco and added vampires. The book is partly set in Australia as well, and it embodies all the themes of that country’s disco era.

I shouldn’t praise it too highly, unofficially I was one of the editors, because Rod, a long-time friend, asked me to look through it for obvious errors, and I did so. (What? pass up a chance to read a good book before it’s officially published and get the copy free? Never!) But friendship and unofficial involvement aside, this book is well written and a lot of fun to read.

The story starts in The Blue, a disco club, frequented by a most unpleasant woman who enjoys being that way. Paul enters the club and she sneers at him – before another woman approaches. Paul thinks he’s going to get lucky and he is – depending on your definition of luck. He’s about to become one of the undead and after that his – er – life will never be the same.

Paul, having considering the possibilities, his past life, and some of its miseries, is setting out to change things. Not just his own life, but the lives and attitudes of a large number of other people. He’s about to become a crusader, trying to impress decent behavior on those around him. A losing battle, but he’s going to make an impression before it ends – and he does.

A good read. And a word for the publisher, they did an excellent job, good layout and presentation, artwork, and the book binding. You could do worse than to go to their website and see what else they have available for sale.

Hercules and the Moon Goddess

Hercules is a mortal man with god-like strengths and power. He is the son of the God, Zeus, and the mortal woman, Alcmene. He has been plagued by the curses that Zeus' wife Hera has put on him thru the years. He lost his first family, now he has another wife and children only to be taken by the Blue Moon Goddess.

The beautiful moon goddess has many plans for the men she captures; making it look as if a large monster captured them, and they are never seen or heard from again. She finds herself attracted to Hercules, and while she believes she is using him, he is actually using her to escape.

The moon goddess uses her womanly ways in addition to her monster-sized robots to kidnap men straight out of thin air to gain ore for her planet. Hercules must find away to free himself and the other soldiers, but can he do it in time to save their lives?

This is a tale with a bit of mystery involved. It showed the many sides and tribulations of Hercules. It also has very interesting characters that make the story entertaining.

Spawns of the Titans

Hercules is always seeking out adventure and trying to right wrongs, to defeat the forces of evil. He is able to do this because even though he is a mortal he has the powers of the gods from his father, Zeus.

Theseus and Ulysses want to be with Hercules when he leaves on his latest adventure. Ulysses looks up to Hercules and wants him to teach him the ways of fighting.

The barbarians give up a great fight to Hercules, his friends and warriors. Hercules finds that he wants to free slaves on what people believe to be an island of impending death.

This story is filled with pirates and adventures galore. There are many battles showing the strengths and weaknesses of many. Entertaining read.

The legends of Atalanta

Atalanta is the most ferocious woman warrior there ever was. Abandoned by her parents, she was raised by a she-bear the gods sent to keep her safe. She learned how to be one with the bear and learned many ways to fight and survive.

Without knowing someone is observing her, Atalanta kills two attacking centaurs by herself. She struck them both down with an arrow released from her bow.

After fighting the attacking centaurs, she finds herself on the hunt for a ferocious wild boar. She must fight to prove herself among the men. But will she be able to conquer the destructive forces at hand?

What strength and power you can find in this story with jealousy among the men and major killings throughout. Short but entertaining.

Atalanta and the Golden Lion

Atalanta, the well-known women warrior, finds herself in another battle. Battling dragons, and the large, golden lion from which she took the beautiful mane.

Tiberius the Lesser has seen firsthand how Atalanta the warrior fights her enemies and the men who would challenge her. He knows that many will write songs and stories about her throughout history.

With new battles on the horizon, Atalanta and her fellow warriors will have their hands full. There will be bloodshed and consequences for a Atalanta that she could not foresee.

Exciting, and action packed, this seems like the story with the most battles. You also get to see a side of Atalanta as told by a fellow warrior.

Atalanta Alters the Tide of Alida

Atalanta is spending time at the home of her parents when Rassesi comes to her looking for help in defeating a dark force in the underwater, Alida. Longing for another adventure, she readily accepts.

Rassessi had a dream of a man needing help, so he goes to Zeus to find out if it was real. He learns the dream is real and that he can take two others with him to defeat the underworld god.

The three warriors descend into the fight of their lives. Some will live and some will die but can they accomplish their task of defeating the god and releasing Alida from the curse they have been under?

More battles and action with a bit of treachery in this story. Wonderful visions of the gods and monsters. Enjoyable.

Each one of these short stories tells a tale of a different battle between the mortals and gods; between good and evil. These authors do a good job of combining them all in one place for the enjoyment of the reader. Although I am not a fan of Greek Mythology, I did enjoy the stories told in Heroes of Ancient Greece.

Jimmy Malone is an old fashioned super hero. He secretly works alongside the police as The Black Ghost. As long as people do not learn who he really is, especially the police who he aims to help. Using his anonymity, he can bend and break the rules that bind the local law enforcement.

Penny Malone married Jimmy knowing his alternate identity. Being the only person who does results in her often helping Jimmy in his crime fighting adventures. She has also been known to not only provide an alibi for Jimmy but to dress up as The Black Ghost to help keep Jimmy’s secret safe.

This is a collection of stories depicting a number of The Black Ghost’s adventures. Jimmy has been trained in a number of Martial arts and fighting methods. He is also more than competent with his favored guns. Jimmy’s step-father is in charge of the detective department of the local police. This is where The Black Ghost finds most of the crimes he fights. Although his father suspects Jimmy’s involvement with the masked man, he has never been able to prove it.

Reading this book has been an education for me. Mr. Johnson describes his work as a ‘Pulp Thriller’. This is a genre I had never heard of let alone read, but from the introduction forward, I was hooked. These stories are strong and exciting, as are the characters. Jimmy has a strong sense of justice and a compelling need to protect those he deems innocent. Penny is Jimmy’s wife and the stable part of his life. It takes a great strength of character to be able to support a man with such an unusual hobby. Mr. Johnson has written an enlightening book and I will definitely be interested in reading more about his unique hero.

REVIEW BY LYN McCONCHIE:

I've always liked Rod's work so I was happy to hearthat he had a second short story collection appearing in America.  (Previous work was 20th Century Dart.)  This is a solid little collection of 20 stories.  In my opinion, a couple of the tales are a little weak but overall there's a good feel to the work as you read.  The stories flow from one to the other, and the themes are consistent, with a univying character to hold them together well.

Rod tends to write horror, but his tales are usually more than mere spatter, his work often looks at themes and trends in society.  His story "Five O'Clock" I found deeply touching, it's a story about family and what they can mean, and how bereft of desperately needed support you can be when they are gone.

"The Big Aunty Curse" is a wicked little tale about the evils of reality television and I snickered through most of it.  Who hasn't thought that just once it would be pleasant to see those smarmy presenters on similar shows get their comeuppance?  Well, in this story one does 0 a nice piece of wish-fulfillment.

A longer story, "The Trials and Tribulations of Kara" is a tale of revenge - of a sort.  And of a mad scientist, a Gypsy woman with troubles of her own, and a very interesting plane flight - with optional entertainment.  The outcome strongly reminds me of the saying about "allowing sleeping dogs to lie," and in this case Victor - descendant of the scientist - and his assistants should have listened.

"Killing the Jocks" is a clever tale about Peter.  It says that you may be able to take a boy out of Nerdland but it's far more difficult to take Nerdland out of the boy.  I chuckled over the last couple of sentences, there's a fine razor-edge of irony there that shows the author is capable of seeing both sides of his theme.

(This story may be something of a forerunner to Rod's newest work - DISCO EVIL, DEAD MAN'S STAND - a full-length book, not a collection, which I've been privileged to read in first draft recently, and which I thought a maturing of his writing abilities.  The theme, both of this story and of Disco Evil, is likely to be controversial in some quarters, but I found them strong and readable works.)

All in all, this is a good collection.  Night To Dawn Books have done a nice job on the cover art too.  The volume is staying in my own library to be reread somewhere down the track, and I can't say fairer than that.

Colonel Evelyn Peterson is ready for the commission of a lifetime. Her career is a testament to years of hard work and dedication, and the trip to Mars is just one more feather in her cap. She will be among the first to build a living community on an alien planet.

Major Adam Cooper is second in command to the Colonel. His respect and admiration for her is absolute, and if he drives her a little nuts, it just keeps her on her toes. He would give his life for his crew mates, and there is no question in his mind that the Colonel would do the same.

Colonel Peterson and her crew set off on an adventure like no other. They are to set up a bio-dome on Mars, and start a terra forming project. However the mission quickly becomes one of survival on a planet so alien that it barely resembles Earth. The ship and its crew are swept back in time to the Permian Period of the Paleozoic Era; which is approximately 250 million years in the past. Colonel Peterson and Major Cooper along with their five crew mates fight for their lives against a primordial planet and its inhabitants. Humans may be the highest on the evolutionary ladder, but nature has a way of evening out the playing field. Does the crew have any hope of survival? Or will they become just another species to fall victim to the great extinction?

This story has such a fascinating concept, I was enthralled from the very beginning. If you are at all interested in prehistoric Earth, this is a fantastic fictional read. Mr. Johnson gives life to prehistoric Earth with amazing detail. His descriptions of plant and animal life, as well as the geographical layout makes the story come to life for the reader. From the scorching desert to the steaming swamps each page is loaded with an eye for detail. The characters are also fully developed, and have a great diversity of personality. I fully enjoyed this story, and hope that Mr. Johnson has many more to come.
